Which courses do you teach this year?

Seminar in Firm Location Strategy

What do you like most about the course that you teach/your field of expertise?

I really like that all students have their own ideas about what firm location choice means at the start of the seminar, but most students are still amazed about all possibilities the field of study has to offer. It is really nice to show the students all the details and challenges.

What did you study and where?

Economics at the EUR

What kind of student were you?

I was a really busy student. I studied, played a lot of tennis (also in the university team), tried to go to the beach as often as possible when the surf was up, did some boxing here and there and worked as a part-time consultant two days a week. Oh, I also had some friends.

Looking back, is there anything you would do differently about your time as a student?

Yes, I was not really involved in student life. Maybe that’s a good idea for next time.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Do I have any? I still do the boxing thing and I like to run. But most time I spend with the kids: Legos Ninjago is actually quite cool.

What are you most proud of?

That I can work together and get along with anyone.

What is your advice to this year's UPT students?

Simple: Focus on data, methods, and techniques. That’s the future, that’s you.

Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?

For fun classes you should go to Hong Kong. When I was on exchange (to all Dutchies, you must go, promise?) I took a class on international financial markets. The prof. was a really nice guy and I liked his teaching style. Apparently, all the locals thought the guy to be extremely boring (I don’t know why). When the break of a not so challenging lecture started, it turned out that all locals were asleep in the room. All exchange students and the prof. walked out for a coffee and when we came back they were still asleep, all of them! The prof. went totally mad! That was great to see, and we had private classes afterwards. I learned a lot!
